Family: There are her parents Arthur and Molly, and the six Weasley brothers, all older than Ginny. She particularly looks up to Bill, the oldest, and has learned a lot from the mischievous twins, Fred and George. She deals very calmly and matter-of-factly with the overprotectiveness of Ron, the youngest brother.

General: Ginny is proof of how powerful someone can be even without physical stature. She's also proof of how much more one can accomplish without a hopeless crush on anybody. Younger and smaller than the six very talented and boisterous Weasley boys, Ginny has learned to hold her own. As the first girl born into the Weasley clan for some time, Ginny may have had to face certain expectations--but when after growing up in the same house as Fred and George, one learns that there's little time to be a blushing flower. She's learned to think around the rules and to lie with a straight face. She has genuine confidence, born of her own hard experiences; she knows her talents and knows which battles she wants to fight with them.

Ginny spent her childhood dreaming of the day she would go to Hogwarts--and spent the year before she did dreaming of meeting the legendary Harry Potter. When he became friends with her brother Ron, who is just a year older than Ginny, and even stayed at the Burrow, a more confident girl would have seen it in as a stroke of luck. Unfortunately, Ginny was completely overcome by Harry's bravery and kindness and was convinced he'd never show interest in her. Her brothers' teasing about her feelings didn't help. Whenever Harry approached, Ginny either ran away or dropped whatever she was holding and turned red. Although normally chatty with her brothers, Ginny never spoke in Harry's presence until she demonstrated her own bravery by defending him to Draco Malfoy in the Flourish and Blotts bookshop just before she started school.

Of course, the Flourish and Blotts encounter was pivotal for another reason; when Ginny looked at the secondhand textbooks her parents had bought her there, she found an old diary in one of them. It was just what she needed, an outlet for her embarrassment over her tattered robes and inability to impress the boy she adored. Ginny wrote about these things in the diary as she started her Hogwarts education, and the memory of Tom Riddle, who owned the diary fifty years before, wrote back in a most friendly manner. Little did Ginny know, Riddle was actually a fragment of Lord Voldemort's own soul; his diary, a Horcrux, had been slipped into her books by former Death Eater Lucius Malfoy, and the more she wrote in it, the stronger this version of Voldemort became. Riddle enchanted Ginny to set his Basilisk on the school's Muggle-born students. She started to question the diary's power as hours disappeared from her memory. She would find herself covered in feathers or paint, having been forced to kill off the school roosters on one occasion and to paint the Heir of Slytherin's message on the wall on another.

Afraid she was being used to attack students, Ginny tried to get rid of the diary by flushing it down a toilet. Moaning Myrtle, a ghost, revolted against the book in the pipes, though, and flooded the toilet so the diary was found by Harry himself. As soon as Ginny realized he had it, she rummaged through his room to take it back. It wasn't long before Riddle tried to get rid of her by leading her down to the Chamber of Secrets to die so he would live fully again. Fortunately for Ginny, Harry came to rescue her as Riddle thought he would, and he was more of a success at it than Riddle had expected. Ginny never suffered blame for the diary incident, and Headmaster Dumbledore quickly dispelled her fears of expulsion. However, she suffered the huge setback of owing Harry her life and her reputation when she had so wanted to prove herself to him.

For the next couple of years at Hogwarts, Ginny reverted to silence around Harry unless she was in the presence of her brothers, most of whom she feels very comfortable with. Ginny brought Harry a magical get-well card after his Quidditch defeat in her second year, and just before her third year, she was in his company at the Quidditch World Cup. Midway through her third year, Ginny accepted Neville Longbottom's invitation to accompany him to the Yule Ball, and shortly after that, Ron suggested she go with Harry. Though this was a sore disappointment at the time, Ginny did meet a Ravenclaw boy named Michael Corner at the Ball, and they began going out at the end of that year. Ginny gained a great deal of confidence from this and lost her self-consciousness around Harry. (This, of course, was her aim, on Hermione's advice.) She also probably gained a great sense of purpose while living at the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. The fight against Voldemort is probably more personal to her than to her likewise inquisitive brothers, because unlike them, she has faced him before.

During Ginny's fourth year, then, she had no inhibitions around Harry. She sympathized with his indignation over the Daily Prophet's treatment of his story and over his Quidditch ban later in the year. She even tried to help along his stormy relationship by encouraging him to talk with Cho. At the same time, however, she never let him feel sorry for himself. More direct and concise than even Hermione, Ginny didn't allow him to spend too much time moping, insisting that he would play Quidditch again, and especially pointing out how "stupid" he'd been following the Christmastime attack on her father. She showed Harry he couldn't really be blamed for what happened to Mr. Weasley, but most of all she proved to him the value of her own experience. She was the only one who could reassure him his mind was his own.

Ginny can't stand moping from anyone; she dumped Michael while he sulked about her Quidditch team beating his that spring. She knows she needs a boy who can appreciate her talents fully, not hold her ability as Gryffindor Seeker against her nor refrain from hexing her when practising at the DA. And now that she's not worrying about Harry seeing her as impressive, she's impressing everyone all the more by being herself. She almost rivals the twins in wit and boldness; she is good at voice impersonations; and she herself came up with the name Dumbledore's Army for the secret defense group. Ginny helped the twins use the Extendable Ears at Order headquarters, and much later helped Harry use Professor Umbridge's office with her story about Garroting Gas in the hall. She proved herself a formidable opponent to the Inquisitorial Squad with her Bat-Bogey Hex, and though her ankle was broken and she was threatened with the Cruciatus Curse in the Department of Mysteries, Ginny stayed in the fight as long as she could.

Ginny's fifth year proved even more momentous. She studied for her OWL exams and again fought Death Eaters, this time within Hogwarts. She also got a new pet, a Pygmy Puff called Arnold, and made it onto the Quidditch team again, this time as a Chaser. Her temporary turn as Seeker helped the team win the Quidditch Cup and won her the perfect moment to get together with Harry at last. Earlier in the year she was dating one of Harry's friends, Dean Thomas, but she seemed to find him overprotective. With Harry, she finally felt like his equal, particularly after he'd had to wait for her a little as she'd had to wait a lot. And he first kissed her without knowing she wanted him to; this risk proved the depth of his feelings for her. Ginny's respect for Harry is strong enough so she will stand aside to let him pursue Voldemort-- at least for a little while.
